The Black Angels

The Black Angels resurrect drone sounds of the psychedelic 60's era with the hypnotic drumlines of Stephanie Bailey and the ghostly lyrics of Alex Maas. Members also include Kyle Hunt, Christian Bland and Nate Ryan, who all are contributing bass, guitar and keyboardists. Formed in 2004 in Austin, Texas, the band founded it's name from the Velvet Underground's "Black Angel Death Song" which appropriately captures the very essence of their music. The Black Angels have hovered over many cities since their beginning, shadowing influences of Austin's first psychedelic band, Roky Erickson's 13th Floor Elevators and in October-November of 2008 served as his backing band on tour. Their debut album Passover (2006) first track, "Young Men Dead" creates a scene of smoked filled back alley clubs with darkly vamped bass lines, reminiscent of nostalgic undertones of Bauhaus and Joy Division. Later in 2008, they released Directions to See a Ghost and the track "Science Killer" has a concoction of hypnotic bass and drum beats mixed with raw guitar shreds. "You on the Run" has great 60's tambourine back up, harder edge and faster paced tempo that creates an electrifying sensation.

Toured with artists such as The Black Keys, Wolfmother and The Ravonettes and showcased during SXSW in 2006, 2008 and gigged at The Austin Psych Fest in April of 2010. Their most recently released album, Phosphene Dream, in August of 2010 hit the Austin Music scene and national underground scene that corralled a slew of followers. The Black Angels will surely summon you to their next show and captivate you with their trance.
